Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Premier Research Driven Pharmacy Institute in Gujarat

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Pharmaceutical chemistry plays a major role in shaping a student into a true pharmacy professional. Pharmaceutical chemistry is a discipline at the intersection of chemistry and pharmacology involved in with design, synthesis and developing drug molecules. Though the profession has undergone tremendous changes and has registered great advancements in various branches of it, the importance of pharmaceutical chemistry in the curriculum of a pharmacy programme cannot be overemphasised. Every branch becomes invigorated when a new bioactive molecule is discovered. The diversity offered by the subject is amazing.

Medicinal chemistry involves the identification, synthesis and development of new chemical entities suitable for therapeutic use. It also includes the study of existing drugs, their biological properties, and their quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR). Pharmaceutical chemistry is focused on quality aspects of medicines and aims to assure fitness and efficacy for the medicinal products.

The department offers a wide area of research in the hub of new drug discovery, process and developmental methods, including study of mechanism of drugs and also analytical method development for new drugs. Computer-aided drug design (CADD) and new biotechnological approaches are opening new avenues in the field of medicinal chemistry. Its teaching missions include instruction in Pharmaceutical Chemistry to the students of post graduate (M.Pharm) programs and undergraduate (B.Pharm), besides supporting research scholars to the award of their Ph.D. degree.
